The October Surprise
theory refers to a purported deal between high-level Reagan campaign people (like his campaign manager and future CIA Director William J. Casey) and the Iranian government to delay the release of 52 U.S. embassy diplomats in Tehran until after the November 1980 U.S. elections. The main cause for suspicion was the timing of the hostages' release -after 444 days captivity- which took place only 6 minutes after former actor Ronald Reagan was sworn into office on January 20, 1981. Added to this suspicion was Reagan's subsequent decision to provide arms to the anti-U.S. Iranian government. The crisis radicalized the Iranian revolution, strengthening the Ayatollah Khomeini, lifting Reagan into power, and changing the world for decades. What we are experiencing right now was bred in the early 80s and was, anyway, economically foreseen by Karl Marx in the 19th century.
